DIVE SITES AMED

Spectacular coral slopes and drift dives.

DIVING IN AMED

Amed is a little village living from fishing and salt panning on the North East coast of Bali, not far from Tulamben. The village of Amed is spread out along the coast and is made up of several bays, which offers some amazing dive sites and absolutely the best snorkeling in Bali.

AMAZING AMED

Amed has a relaxing, authentic atmosphere and the diving is accessed either from shore or from a traditional fishing boat called a “jukung”. Amed easily has some of the best and most interesting dive sites on the Island, which should not be missed.

Wide range and variety of dive sites makes Amed a compelling dive destination. Here you can dive on a Japanese shipwreck, vertical drop-offs, and stunning coral gardens on a pleasant drift dive. The occasional sea turtles and white tip reef sharks can be spotted on most of the dive sites without forgetting the huge amount of nudibranchs and other macro life.

DIVE SITES

Pyramids

Back in the 1990’s Balinese association sunk dozens of hollow concrete pyramid structures to attract marine life close to the shoreline, which makes this dive site suitable for snorkeling as well.

Pyramids are located just a few minutes by boat or car from Bali Dive Resort Amed. This dive site can be done either with or without a boat, depending on the tide. The shallowest set of pyramids are set to about 5 meters of depth and the deepest part reaches nearly 30 meters of depth, which makes this site suitable for all levels of divers. Some currents may occur depending on the tides.

We start our dive on a sandy bottom full of garden eels. Once we move towards the deeper set of pyramids, we often encounter many stingrays on the bottom, close to the coral filled pyramids.

Keep your eyes open for small critters such as ghost pipefish, many different nudibranches and if you are lucky and have good pair of eyes, perhaps you will spot a pygmy seahorse clinging on to a gorgonian fan.
When we are moving further and reach the natural reef after the pyramids, we might be lucky as to spot green or hawksbill turtles and reef sharks.

Jemeluk Wall

Jemeluk wall is a nice dive site with clear water along a steep wall dropping deep down to the abyss. Carried by the gentle current, divers are astonished by the abundance of fish life by the huge barrel sponges and sea fans that decorates the wall.

We can either enter this dive site from the shore or use the local “jukung” boat, which will drop us straight on top of the drop off. If we use the boat for this dive, we just drift along the wall and enjoy the beauty of it until we must surface.

On this dive site we often spot large schools of big mouthed mackerel, napoleon wrasse, turtles and of course beautiful corals, which are the highlight of this dive.

Jemeluk bay’s clear waters and absence of currents make it the perfect place for a stunning dive. It is suitable for all levels of divers and the bay is perfect for snorkelers as well.

Bunutan Express

Bunutan is one of our favorite dive sites and located just 15 minutes from Bali Dive Resort Amed by boat or car. The dives in Bunutan can be done either direct from the shore or with a boat.

This dive site is best experienced as a drift dive. We work our way from a sandy slope, with thousands of garden eels, through a deeper corner with excellent marine life and huge gorgonian fans to the gentle slope where we can drift along the reef and look out for Sharks. We also have a big chance to spot barracudas, giant trevallies and many different moray eel species.

The current on this dive site can be quite strong, but it mostly goes parallel to the coast. To get the best out of this dive, we recommend a minimum of Advanced Open Water certification.

Bunutan is a must dive site to explore while in Amed!

Deep Blue

Deep blue is a challenging drift dive for advanced divers. The dive site is only a 15 minute boat ride away from Bali Dive Resort Amed and we use the local fishing boat “jukung” to get here. The dive starts in a shallow bay with some very nice coral bommies covered in sea fans with tons of small fish hovering around them.

When we drop into the deeper part of the dive site, on about 30 meters depth, the current will take us further along the reef. The current is horizontal, with no up or down current, so we can just relax and enjoy the show. Schools of batfish, snappers, napolean wrasses, giant trevellies and barracudas will make sure to give us an exciting dive. We also often spot some sharks and turtles on Deep Blue.

Japanese Wreck

Japanese wreck is located about 20 minutes away from Bali Dive Resort Amed and only few meters away from the shore in a calm bay. The 20 meters long Japanese shipwreck, fully covered with healthy soft and hard corals, lies in the shallow waters. This dive site is suitable for all levels of divers and also for snorkelers.

Although the wreck itself is not particularly interesting and no one seems to know exactly how it got there or when it was sunk, the reef surrounding the wreck is amazing and has plenty to offer.

The wreck is situated close to the Lombok strait, which sometimes can cause unpredictable and tricky currents. Even if the currents can be strong, it is never really a problem. Remember to move slow and listen to your guide. This way we will have an enjoyable dive with loads of fun.

Expect to see a lot of macro life, with plenty of nudibranches, leaf scorpionfish, shrimps, crabs, pygmy seahorse and so much more.
